Spring is near - and our tulips are kicking off our gardens! They have a fascinating history and are surprisingly easy to grow if you know what they need.

A Quick History Lesson

Did you know tulips got their start in Central Asia? From there, they became a big deal in the Ottoman Empire and eventually took Europe by storm in the 16th century. The Netherlands went all in on tulips—so much so that there was a time when a single tulip bulb was worth more than gold! People called it "Tulip Mania." These days, the Dutch still celebrate their love for tulips with massive gardens like Keukenhof. Those bulbs have now made their way to the USA, North Carolina and now our local farm!

Planting Tulips Like a Pro

Planting tulips is a piece of cake with a little prep:

  • Pick the right spot: They love sunny spots with soil that drains well.

  • Plant in the fall: Aim for 6–8 weeks before the ground freezes.

  • Get the depth right: Bury the bulbs about 6–8 inches deep, pointy side up.

  • Space ‘em out: Leave about 4–6 inches between each bulb.

  • Containers: Use the same guidelines to plant in containers, allowing them to winter sow outside as well.

Give them a good drink of water after planting, and they’ll be all set to nap through winter before blooming in spring.

Keeping Your Tulips Happy

Tulips are pretty low-maintenance, but a bit of TLC goes a long way:

  • Water them just enough—not too much, or the bulbs might rot.

  • Add some fertilizer when you plant and again in spring when you see leaves.

  • Once the blooms fade, snip off the flowers, but let the leaves stick around until they turn yellow. This helps the bulbs recharge for next year.

Why Tulips Are Awesome

Tulips are more than just pretty—they’re a little piece of history and a lot of joy in your garden. Whether you’re a pro gardener or just testing your green thumb, tulips are a great choice. Plus, planting them in the fall gives you something to look forward to when the snow melts.
